IDEAs in Action
We believe that IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability) are key enablers to accomplishing our Lab’s vision of bringing science solutions to the world, and are critical components of our Lab’s stewardship efforts.
IDEA produces high-performing teams, and drives meaningful impact and outcomes. IDEA is not separate from our work; instead, it is integral to who we are and what we do.
The IDEAS-in-Action website is a collection of trainings, toolkits, research and articles to help you expand your knowledge, bring awareness to your current strengths, and identify areas of growth and learning. In doing so, we hope this site helps you expand inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability for yourself, your team and the lab.
“We are not what we know but what we are willing to learn."
IDEA & Berkeley Lab's
As leaders and citizens of the Lab, we are entrusted to care for the people, research, and resources that make our mission possible, a responsibility we call stewardship. IDEA principles are inextricably linked to our values of team science, service, trust, innovation, and respect. Learn more about integrating the stewardship values and IDEA. Visit the Stewardship website to access the Values Conversation Toolkit.
What does IDEA mean to you? This overview of the four components of IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, accountability) offers a series of questions that give you a chance for self-reflection and allows you to bring more awareness your strengths and areas of potential learning within IDEA.
Fostering Connection & Community
Remote and hybrid work comes with the risk of disconnection from our co-workers and our community at Berkeley Lab. Research shows that employees who feel a sense of connection and belonging are more innovative, productive and better at their jobs. But how do we create that sense of belonging and connection on our teams whether we’re in person, entirely remote or some combination of the two?
Volunteer with the K-12 outreach program, learn more about our community relations office opportunities, join an ERG, hire a veteran intern, mentor a science student and/or learn something new. In this new section we highlight the great work being done at Berkeley Lab to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace and our outreach efforts to bring science education to the community.
IDEA at Berkeley Lab
Messages from Lady Idos, Berkeley Lab's former Chief Diversity Officer (on detail) and Mike Witherell, Lab Director.
Inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability are four important attributes of the Lab's culture. Berkeley Lab's former Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer (on detail) Lady Idos explains how these, known by the acronym IDEA, are defining how we work together to support the Lab's mission.
Diversity drives the ideas that unlock our science according to Berkeley Lab Director Mike Witherell. He calls on the Lab to focus on four concepts: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability, or IDEA.
